REVERSE 911 SYSTEM INITIATED

The City of San Diego recently initiated a "Reverse 911" telephone message system in an effort to bring emergency information to land line telephones of San Diego residences and businesses.

A taped message delivers instructions (in English and Spanish) to land line telephones on how to proceed during an emergency. People with non-land line phones (i.e., cell phones or VOIP phones) can register online to receive calls. They must log-on to http://www.sandiego.gov/ohs to register.

For large scale disasters and emergencies, the City has the ability to activate the system’s Mass Call feature, which has the capacity to make up to 240,000 30-second community emergency calls per hour. The calls would be activated only in the following situations: evacuation notices, imminent or perceived threat to health, life, and property within the city limits, disaster notifications, and public safety tests to verify data accuracy and system operability.

SCRIPPS RANCH FIRE SAFE COUNCIL (SRFSC)

The Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council (SRFSC) was developed by members of the Scripps Ranch community in an effort to:

Reduce the susceptibility of our urban community to future wildfire destruction by taking proactive measures to: suppress dangerous ground fuel; promote an awareness of fire prevention among homeowners and civic leaders; and participate in fire safe organizations and educational programs.

THE GOAT BRUSH ABATEMENT PROJECT -

A Community brush management project initiated by Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council, supported by members of the Community. 185 homeowners who participated in the project surely feel a sense of pride, and are much more comfortable about their safety.

Project Summary:

• 82 acres treated.
• 412 homes within the wildfire urban interface high-risk zone benefited from the 200-foot firebreaks.
• Project cost $61,489 - 20% percent paid by SRFSC Grant funds, 16 percent by a San Diego County Grant, and 64 percent by the homeowners
